1. Understanding Sin
From the moment Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world and has affected every person born since (Romans 5:12).
However, humans, being flawed and sinful, cannot meet that standard on their own. The first step in recognizing our need for salvation is understanding that sin is not just a behavior issue but a heart condition.
What Does the Bible Say?
Before diving into the deeper implications of this verse, it is very important to understand what the Bible means by "sin," that is, the Biblical concept of sin.
In Christian theology, sin is anything that goes against the will and nature of God. It is not just about overtly evil actions like murder or theft, but also includes wrong thoughts, motives, attitudes, and the absence of good where it is due. Sin can be committed knowingly or unknowingly.
Sin is defined as any action, thought, or attitude that goes against God's will and law.
Furthermore, sin is more than just outward actions such as lying, stealing, or murder. It is rooted in the heart, encompassing pride, selfishness, greed, and unbelief.
Falling Short Of The Glory Of God
The Word of the Lord refers to sin as missing the mark, where the "mark" is the standard of righteousness and holiness set by God.
It clearly states that all human beings are sinners.
The Apostle Paul, in Romans 3:23, summarizes the universality of sin by saying,
23. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:23
No one, no matter how virtuous they may appear outwardly, is free from sin.
This notion of "falling short" is crucial. God’s standard of righteousness is perfection because He is holy.
From the Christian perspective, this inherent sinfulness stems from the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, which introduced sin into the human race.
The reality of sin is pervasive. It influences every aspect of human existence, tainting our thoughts, words, and deeds. Sin is not limited to individuals who commit heinous crimes. It affects every person, young and old, rich and poor, educated and uneducated.
This universal reality of sin forms the backdrop to John’s assertion that “if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves.”
Wherefore, humans, being flawed and sinful, can never meet that standard on their own—it is biblically impossible, only Christ Jesus is the Only One who can all over the universe!
2. The Deception Of Self-Righteousness, Self-Deception And The Nature Of Pride
Sin affects everyone...
From the most pious individual to the person farthest from faith, no one is exempt from sin’s reach.
The Old Testament prophet Isaiah says, "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way" (Isaiah 53:6). This "going astray" is emblematic of humanity’s tendency to pursue personal desires and reject God's guidance.
Even when we strive to do good, we often fall short because of our selfish motives or failure to trust God fully.
King David, one of the Bible’s most revered figures, openly acknowledged his sinful nature.
5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Psalms 51:5
Despite being a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), David recognized that sin was a fundamental part of his human nature. His confession reflects the need for all of us to humbly acknowledge our sinfulness before God....
The Deception of Self-Righteousness
One of the most common deceptions people face is the belief that they are inherently good or that they can live a morally upright life without acknowledging their sin.
This idea is particularly prevalent in today’s culture, where many people think that as long as they are kind or helpful to others, they are not "sinners." Yet, the Bible is clear that self-righteousness—believing that we are good enough on our own—is a form of self-deception.
8. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 1:8
To claim that we are without sin is to live in denial of the truth. It is important to understand that the purpose of this verse is not to condemn but to lead us to the truth of our need for God's grace. By denying our sinful nature, we miss out on the opportunity to experience the salvation that Jesus offers.
Self-Deception and the Nature of Pride
John’s statement cuts directly to the heart of human pride. Many people resist acknowledging their sinfulness because it forces them to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves.
Pride, a form of self-deception, leads individuals to believe they are "good enough" on their own or that they do not need God's grace.
When people say, "I have no sin," they are effectively denying the very foundation of the Christian understanding of humanity. This self-righteousness often stems from comparing oneself to others. People may think, “I am not as bad as the next person” or “I live a good life, so I am okay.”
However, such an attitude is not only dangerous but also contrary to biblical teaching. The Word of God sets the standard for righteousness much higher — not against other people but against the holiness of God.
6. But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Isaiah 64:6
This means that no amount of good behavior can erase the stain of sin from our souls. To claim we are sinless is to lie to ourselves and reject the truth of our fallen nature.
The consequence of such self-deception is spiritual blindness — an inability to see the need for grace, repentance, and ultimately salvation.
3. The Consequences Of Sin
Self-Deception and the Nature of Pride
The Bible teaches that sin has serious consequences.
23. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23
The "death" referred to here is not just physical death but spiritual death — eternal separation from God. This is the ultimate consequence of sin.
Sin creates a barrier between us and a holy God, and without intervention, we remain in a state of spiritual death.
However, the second part of the verse offers hope: “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus Christ came into the world to offer salvation to all who would believe in Him.
His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead provide the means by which our sins can be forgiven. Jesus took the punishment that we deserve upon Himself, offering us the gift of eternal life.
This is why no one can claim to be without sin or to be able to save themselves. Salvation is not something we can achieve through our own efforts. It is a gift of God, made possible through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
To reject the reality of our sin is to reject the need for this gift. This is why John says, “the truth is not in us” if we claim to be sinless.
The truth, in this context, is the Gospel — the message that Christ died for sinners and offers them eternal life.
4. The Role of Confession And Repentance: The Path To Salvation
Acknowledging our sinfulness is the first step toward salvation. The Bible teaches that confession and repentance are essential components of receiving God's forgiveness.
Confession involves admitting our sins before God, while repentance means turning away from those sins and committing to live according to God's will.
Lets explore what the Bible says about confession and repentance, hope for the lost and being born again...
The Need For A Savior: Jesus Christ - The Only Path To Salvation
Recognizing that we are sinners is only the first step.
The second is understanding that we cannot save ourselves.
Many people attempt to "earn" their way to heaven through good works, charity, or religious rituals. While these actions may have value, they are insufficient to deal with the problem of sin.
6. But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Isaiah 64:6
... "All our righteous acts are like filthy rags" in the eyes of God. This means that even our best efforts fall short of God’s perfect standard!...
This is where the gospel of Jesus Christ becomes crucial. Jesus, the Son of God, lived a sinless life and offered Himself as a sacrifice for the sins of humanity. His death on the cross paid the penalty for our sins, and His resurrection guarantees eternal life to all who place their faith in Him.
John 14:6 captures the exclusivity of this salvation: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Jesus is not just one option among many; He is the only way to be reconciled to God!
Through faith in Him, we receive forgiveness for our sins and are granted the gift of eternal life.
Hope To The Lost And Sinners No Matter How Deep They Are In Sin
Sin affects our relationships with others and our own sense of peace.
Greed, jealousy, and pride destroy communities, friendships, and families. We see the evidence of sin in the brokenness of the world—wars, crime, hatred, and injustice are all manifestations of the sinful nature that plagues humanity.
Yet, even in the face of these grim realities, the the Word of God offers hope!
23. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:23
Romans 6:23 doesn’t end with death; it continues, "but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Salvation is God’s remedy for sin, and it is available to all who believe.
The verse that follows 1 John 1:8 offers hope:
8. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9
While the Bible is clear that we are all sinners, it is equally clear that God has provided a way for us to be forgiven. That way is through confession and repentance. To confess is to agree with God about the nature of our sin.
It is to acknowledge our wrongdoing, turn away from it, and seek God's forgiveness.Repentance, however, is more than just feeling sorry for what we've done. True repentance involves a change of mind and heart, a decision to turn away from sin and walk in obedience to God's will.
The good news of the Gospel is that when we do this, God is “faithful and just to forgive us.” He does not hold our sins against us but instead cleanses us from all unrighteousness.
Confession And Repentance
1 John 1:9 offers a promise: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Confession is more than simply admitting wrongdoing; it involves a heartfelt acknowledgment of our need for God’s mercy. This is coupled with repentance, which means turning away from sin and toward God.
Repentance is not about being perfect but about having a change of heart—a desire to live according to God’s will rather than following our sinful inclinations.
When we confess our sins and turn to God in repentance, we are met with grace and forgiveness...
Born Again To Newness Of Life
Once we have accepted Christ’s salvation, our lives are transformed, hallelujah!
This does not mean that we become perfect overnight. Christians continue to struggle with sin, but the difference is that we are no longer slaves to sin. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can live in victory over sinful habits and tendencies.
12. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103:12
This illustrates the completeness of God’s forgiveness when we come to Him in humility.
Living In The Light of Salvation
Once we have accepted Christ’s salvation, our lives are transformed, glory be to God!
This does not mean that we become perfect overnight. Christians continue to struggle with sin, but the difference is that we are no longer slaves to sin. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can live in victory over sinful habits and tendencies.
15. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
16. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:16-18
The Word of God above encourages believers to walk in the Spirit and we shall overcome the power of sin in our lives to mortify the deed of the flesh to live the life destined for all believers that believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
As long as we are living under the power of sin we shall never please God because the Lord God is Holy and Righteous. Let us walk in the light of salvation by walking in the power of His Holy Spirit and will have no power to prevail over us in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!
5. The Paradox Of Grace And Justice
Some may wonder how God can forgive sinners and still be just. After all, if God is holy and righteous, how can He overlook sin?
The answer lies in the paradox of grace and justice, which is central to the Christian understanding of salvation.
God does not simply ignore our sin or pretend it never happened. Instead, He deals with it fully and justly by placing the punishment for sin on Jesus Christ. On the cross, Jesus bore the full weight of God's wrath against sin.
In this way, God's justice was satisfied — the penalty for sin was paid in full. At the same time, God’s grace is extended to sinners, offering forgiveness and eternal life to all who trust in Jesus.
This is why salvation is often referred to as a "gift" — it is something we receive, not something we earn.
8. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9. Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
No one can boast of their own righteousness because salvation is entirely a work of God’s grace.
This is the antidote to the prideful claim that we have no sin. It humbles us and reminds us that we are all in need of God's mercy—one way or the other....
Conclusion: Why We All Need Salvation
Ultimately, the statement “He who says he has no sin is a liar” points us to a universal truth: every person is in need of salvation. No one is exempt from sin, and no one can save themselves.
The Word of God teaches that all people are sinners, and to deny this reality is to deceive ourselves.
This reality brings us to the foot of the cross, where we encounter the grace of God through Jesus Christ.
Salvation is not just about avoiding eternal punishment. It is about entering into a restored relationship with God. Sin separates us from God, but through Christ, we are reconciled to Him. Salvation brings peace, joy, and purpose to our lives. It transforms us from the inside out, making us new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
It is a gift from God, offered to all who confess their sins and put their trust in Christ. By acknowledging our sin and receiving God’s grace, we are reconciled to Him and given the promise of eternal life.
To claim that we have no sin is to miss out on the most significant gift God offers — the gift of salvation.
It is only by recognizing our sinfulness and turning to Christ in faith that we can experience the fullness of life that God intends for us.
No one is beyond the reach of God's love and mercy. In Christ, we find the salvation we so desperately need, and through Him, we are made new.
Salvation is not something we can earn or achieve on our own, no matter how many times we may try we will still fail over and over again...
